Dream not of a delicacy in God’s ways

Ezra 5:3
At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shetharboznai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?

So soon as ever they began but to build God’s house they meet with opposition;

which is still Evangelii Genius, guardian spirit of the truth, saith Calvin, the bad angel that haunts the cause of God, and dogs it at the heels. Continue reading “Dream not of a delicacy in God’s ways”

Religious hatred is most bitter

Ezra 4:4
Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

Ezra 4, Ver. 4. Then the people of the land]

Who the nearer they came unto a conjunction with the Jews in matters of religion the deeper hatred they bare them.

Thus at this day, a Jew hates a Christian worse than he doth a Pagan;

so doth a Turk hate a Persian worse than he doth a Christian;

a Papist, a Protestant worse than he doth a Turk;

a formalist, a Puritan worse than he doth a Papist,

Odia Theologica sunt acerbissima.

Religious hatred is most shep.

THE job

Ezra 10:4 We also will be with thee.

Every man must show himself forward to further the work of reformation, moving regularly within his own sphere, and trading every talent for that end and purpose.

Choice and excellent spirits can easily drown all self respects in the glory of God

Ezra 1:5 To build the house of the Lord.

This was what they aimed at, rather than their own liberty.

Choice and excellent spirits can easily drown all self respects in the glory of God.

It was the care of those good people in Joel’s days, that there might be a meat offering and a drink offering unto the Lord their God, whatever became of their own carcases, #Joe 2:14.

Heroic spirits

Ezra 8:30 So took the priests and the Levites the weight of the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem unto the house of our God.

The great charge committed to them, and laid upon them,

did not weaken, but waken, their heroic spirits.

As beggars

Ezra 9:5 And spread out my hands.

With the palms open toward heaven, in a having, craving way, as beggars.

This was the Jewish manner of praying, and

it was very becoming.

Shallow- brained but many headed

Ezra 9:1 The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations.

The many, the common sort, that shallow- brained but many headed beast, that loves to follow the herd and do as the most do, though thereby they be utterly undone for ever.

Poor businesses

Ezra 5: Ver. 8. To the house of the great God.

So they style him, because the Jews called and counted him so. The Lord your God, saith Moses, is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, &c., #De 10:17. Continue reading “Poor businesses”

Great sins do greatly pollute

Ezra 6:21 And the children of Israel, which were come again out of captivity, and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the filthiness of the heathen of the land, to seek the Lord God of Israel, did eat.

From the filthiness of the heathen: Who had filled the land from one end to the other with their uncleannesses, #Ezr 9:11.

Ezra 9:11 Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness.

Great sins do greatly pollute.
