The John Trapp Blog

Trapp will be most valuable to men of discernment (Spurgeon). I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say. (1Cor. 10:15)

A man of courage he must be

Debt 1:17 You shall not be afraid.

For, Facile a iustitia deviat, qui in causis non Deum sed homines pertimescit, saith Chrysostom:

A faint hearted judge doth easily pervert justice. Continue reading “A man of courage he must be”

Princes and businessmen have no easy life

Deut 1 Ver. 12. Bear your cumbrance.

A prince’s temples are not so compassed with a crown, as his mind besieged with cares;

nor is he so lifted up with the splendour of his train, as cast down with the multitude of his fears. Continue reading “Princes and businessmen have no easy life”

Communion and conformity

Numbers 28 Ver. 11. And in the beginning of your months.

Thus they had their daily, weekly, monthly, yearly addresses unto God, that

they might ever be in communion with him, and conformity unto him,

by this continual intercourse.

Lots of Popcorn

Numbers 6, Ver. 3. He shall separate himself from wine.

Lest he should drink and forget the law, {#Pr 31:5} which he was to study diligently: but

loaden bellies make leaden wits:

intemperance takes away the heart, {#Ho 4:11} overchargeth it. {#Lu 21:34}

She hath done the act of a beast

If the spirit of jealousy comes over him and he is jealous of his wife who has defiled herself, or if the spirit of jealousy comes over him and he is jealous of his wife, though she has not defiled herself, then the man shall bring his wife to the priest and bring the offering required of her, a tenth of an ephah of barley flour. Numbers 5:15

Barley, not wheat. She hath done the act of a beast, and her oblation is the meat of a beast.

The work of the ministry

Numbers 4:3 …to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation.

The work of the ministry is not an idle man’s occupation, but a labouring even to lassitude; compared therefore to harvest work, and to that of cleaving wood, digging in mine pits, rowing with oars, &c.

All the comfort is, that God that helped the Levites to bear the ark of the covenant, {#1Ch 15:26} will not be wanting to his weak, but willing servants, “that labour in the word and doctrine.” {#1Ti 5:17}

On Prayer

1John 5:15 We have the petitions that we desired of him.

If we can perceive and discern that God listeneth, the thing is done.

  1. Now the former we may find, first, by a cast of God’s countenance, by a smile of his face, #Ps 22:24 34:15, for a godly man is admitted to see as well as speak; like a good angel, he is ever looking on the face of God; and can gather by that how he shall speed in his suit.

The armor of God

Ver. 11. Put on the whole armour of God.

Or else never think to do the afore mentioned duties; we have a busy adversary to deal with. Continue reading “The armor of God”

Instead of using the f word, GIVE THANKS

Ephesians 5:4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

But rather giving of thanks. A special preservative against the former evils, the filth and power of those base vices. And the word rather imports an extraordinary earnestness to be used in giving thanks to God.
